Visio Divina

1. Choose an image as a focus: it can be on a website, a photograph, painting, or an icon.

2. As you look at the image, notice what really catches your attention. Then let your eyes stay focussed on that detail, resisting the urge to scan the rest of the image. Gently also pay attention to your breathing as you continue to gaze at that part of the image for at least a minute. (Sometimes you may have a sense of what you’re breathing in as a gift from the image and what you’re breathing out/letting go of in your own life but this won’t be the case with every image, so don’t force it!)

3. Then let your eyes gaze at the whole image. Take your time and look at every part of it. See it all. Reflect on the image for a minute or so.

4.  Then it might be helpful to consider the following:

  • What emotions does this image evoke in you?
  • What does the image stir up in you, what questions might it be asking of you, or what is wanting to be brought forth in you?
  • Take time to consider your prayerful response.  You might want to journal, dance, draw etc your response

5.  As you conclude your response, take at least a minute to simply rest in the God who is love before gently moving to whatever is next in your life.
